This is pretty crazy. The Speedy Stop market around the corner from me is now $1.97, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it under $2.00. A buddy said he saw a Quik Trip selling gas for $1.80. I can only figure that with the drop in air and car travel, there is a glut of fuel on the market. Time to go on a road trip!
![]() 03/04/2020 at 11:42 |

$2.03 at the nearby QuikTrip. It got down to $1.93 a while back.

Still stupid cheap. I suppose we have to thank the frackers.

About $3.15. There’s a peculiar formulation for the Bay Area that raises the price. Still, I’d expect maybe $2.70 outside the Bay Area.

The Perot museum here has a really good exhibit explaining the science and engineering behind fracking. It’s really cool.

Just filled here in Santa Barbara this AM. $3.85 a gallon at the “generic brand” station.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
![]() 03/04/2020 at 11:46 |

Still about $2.09 here, at best. $1.90 at a branded, top-tier station is amazing
And those are the pumps where you pull up and see that 93 octane is $2.99, but it’s not listed on the big sign :)
I don’t know when the premium gouging started, but I’m sick of it.

It’s also the reason natural gas prices are so stable— and we now have centuries of supply again.
I always kind of giggle when I hear the Tesla Cult Guys talk about how coal is going away.... but then they leave out that the fastest growing electrical supply in the US is new Compound Cycle Natural Gas Power Plants. Fracking has made natural gas the largest, most reliable and fastest growing supply source. The guys charging their cars in the evening or at night? At least on the coasts it’s pretty likely they are charging on fracked natural gas and don’t realize it.
Double Bonus Round of Irony? The Koch Brothers (via their subsidiaries) absolutely dominate the pipelines and distribution of natural gas in North America. Every time you charge your EV in the evening? The Koch Boys get a little richer. Weird, huh?
![]() 03/04/2020 at 11:52 |

It appears $2.53 for regular and $2.83 for premium. I haven’t bought gas in over a month though

I find it hard to believe that you’ve never seen it under $2, unless it’s a fairly recent station. It should have been there most recently in 2016 when the national average was ~$1.75
![]() 03/04/2020 at 11:56 |

Do you agree that we are dealing with a glut? Otherwise, I would think prices would be up with the virus fears and people filling/stocking up. Most people seem to be putting their money into toilet paper and hand sanitizer tho.

One would go hoarse before even touching the tip of such blind odyssey’s.
![]() 03/04/2020 at 12:06 |

Not really, but here’s why:
1. When commodity prices tank, they tend to all move together. The underlying fear is usually future demand, not necessarily a glut in supply. But with OPEC, all rules about supply and demand don’t matter as much.
That brings me to the second point:
2. Gasoline (like pork bellies or soybeans, and unlike toilet paper or sanitizer ) is complicated and expensive to store in large quantities, whether you’re a big company or just a consumer. If we could do that, you’d probably see the price gouging you’re referring . Most gas price gouging is done for short-term local events, in part to help preserve some of the station’s inventory (not just to be jerks).

Around $2.449 at the BJ’s near my house, which tends to pull nearby stations’ prices down. Our fuel taxes are not even that high in Pennsylvania; instead, it's an effect of living near the wealthiest parts of the state.

Holy shit. My significant others parents Vancouver Special-ish 90s box is all baseboard heating...I can’t imagine what their hydro bill is.
On the other hand, my friend recently had to replace his 6 year old furnace, that cost 6 or 8 grand, and that was wholesale pricing through an HVAC friend
This is why I want solar panels, and a wood pellet stove....

TBH, this is our first bill. I think we may need to adjust how we use our baseboards and maybe cut down on shower length.

That’s insane.
I have little square footage, am full electric, but average around $40 USD/month. Somehow it actually goes down in the summer when I use AC, even though I almost never use heat in the winter.
I suspect some here have it similar though. My mom lives in a small town with a questionably managed PUD, also full electric. It has a $40 USD fee on every bill before usage is added. She averages $150-200 for a <2000 sq ft house.
03/04/2020 at 12:54 |

My go to station was 1,489 euro/litre for 95 octane (91 octane for US) couple days ago so $6.28/gallon. That’s on the cheaper side.

I don't need heat all that often but my primary source of heat is a wood burning stove. Nice to have free heat from random wood picked up off the ground! My electricity cost is also flat rate so no matter how much is used, my rent doesn't change.

in AZ most people
run A/C continually from about late Feb to early November, barring weird weather patterns. I had a really inefficient unit before I replaced it, and my electricity bill was usually in the high 400s, and it breached $500 in a month before I replaced it.
It’s a little saner now, but it’s completely possible to take an average sized house with electric everything and blow through lots of kWh in a month.
![]() 03/04/2020 at 14:04 |

How old are you? I’m thirty-three and remember buying gas for $1.50, and am not located in Texas.
I got my license in 2003. At the time, gas had just spiked to $1.50/gal, and everyone was upset about how expensive it was, and how I wouldn’t get enjoy low gas prices like in the ‘90s.
Now we we think it’s crazy when gas is just under $2/gal.
![]() 03/04/2020 at 14:36 |

I have electric baseboard, and average around the same, even keeping the house at 60. Sure you could insulate better, but there’s no comparison to the energy per dollar of fossil fuels. I put a heat pump in my basement as an experiment since I didn’t have any experience with them prior, I’m now heating an additional ~ 800 square feet, for a few dollars less than before I put it in in January. Heating the airspace uses a ton of energy, every 6 feet of electric baseboard is the equivalent of one 1500w space heater. Your 7 hp pump is the equivalent of 2-3 rooms of electric baseboard, for comparison.
![]() 03/04/2020 at 14:44 |

That's.... a lot. I averaged ours out, and we use about 450 kWh a month, but we also have natural gas heating.
![]() 03/04/2020 at 14:58 |

Why did you switch to electric heat with natural gas being so cheap? Heating with natural gas would cost about half that or less.
If you want to use electric heat and keep the cost reasonable, upgrade the insulation in your house (if you haven’t already done so)
and get
a grid-tied solar system.

“How much worse will it get if I buy an electric car??”
It depends on how much you drive. If you have something like a Tesla, if the pack is very low, fully charging it overnight will cost you between $5-$10 for every 300-400km you drive.
If you drive 2000km/month, it will add maybe $30-$40 per month to your electricity bill. But it would be a net savings because that will likely be 1/5 or less of what you would have spent on gasoline.
It should be noted that gas furnaces are far more efficient than gasoline cars.
That’s why it makes sense to replace a gasoline car with a BEV, but it doesn’t make as much sense to replace a gas furnace with electric heat.
